I have a new Gateway FX (4 months old) which came with Windows Vista Home Premium installed. I have a laptop with Windows Vista Ultimate. I thought it would be great to have Windows Vista Ultimate on both. The networkings (sharing the desktop) is a super innovation.
I purchased W Vista through the Microsoft website (Windows Marketplace – Digital Locker) and proceeded with the 6 hour download. Each time I tried to install the new software, it always hung up before completing the installation and would revert to the WV (Windows Vista) Home Premium.
I called MS WV tech support. It seems as though all of the tech support is from India. I really enjoyed talking with the tech and he seemed to be very knowledgeable. After several hours and allowing him to have access to my computer, he assured me that all precautions had been taken and that my several hour installation would go well. Famous last words.
After several hours, the installation again hung up in the same spot. So, I called tech support again. The young lady was again very helpful and seemed very knowledgeable and after several hours and consultations with other tech engineers, she assured me that the installation was going to be accomplished without a hitch.
After several hours of waiting for the installation to complete, you guessed it, the program again hung up in the same spot. Needless to say my nerves and my patience were frazzled. For the third time, I called WV Tech support. This time the case was escalated to an engineer. He assured me that the installation would be accomplished.
Several long hours later, after accessing my desktop with Windows Assist and Teamviewer, the engineer assured me that the installation would be accomplished without a hitch. He actually stayed on the call during the entire time only to discover that it was impossible to install the Windows Vista Ultimate upgrade on my computer because my brand new (built for me) Gateway computer shipped to me with the 2006 release for the RAID drivers for the NVidia GeForce RAID controller.
My options were to install the new 2008 NVidia driver for the RAID controller and loose 268 gigabytes of information or stick with the Windows Vista Home Premium. I am going to contact Gateway to find out why they have done this to me. What would have been so difficult installing an up-to-date RAID control driver? Why would they sell me a computer that cannot handle an operating system upgrade. Where can I transfer 268 Gigs of information and not loose it?
Because of Gateway’s lack of forethought, I cannot upgrade to Windows Vista Ultimate and use the great features that it offers.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?
